SEGOU FESTIVAL TOUR : February 16-27, 2012
12-Days: Bamako-Segou-Festival-Djenne-Mopti-Niger River Boat Trip-Dogon Country-Sevare-Teriyabugu
Day 1, Feb. 16, 2012: Welcome
Arrive at Bamako Airport; welcome and transport to hotel for overnight.
Day 2, Feb. 17, 2012: Bamako - Segou
Depart for Segou, driving through savanna, stop in Old Segou, the Bambara Kingdom's capital with unique ochre architecture. Meet the village chief and learn about the village's history. Arrive in Segou, a quiet airy city by the Niger River. Check-in, then enjoy the festival activities such as live music, mask dances, puppets, crafts and more, then overnight.
Day 3-4, Feb 18 & 19, 2012: Segou Festival Sur le Niger
2 full days of festival activities: speakers, demonstrations, expositions, movies, story-tellers, marionettes, as well as traditional and contemporary African and world music and dance. Overnight in Segou.
Day 5, Feb 20, 2012: Ségou - Djenne
Breakfast and drive to Djenne, Timbuktu's ancient sister-city and one of UNESCO's World Heritage sites, visit Djenne's weekly market, very colorful and vibrant! See the magnificent Great Mosque - this is the world's largest mud brick architecture, originally built in 1907. Lunch and siesta, then in the afternoon take a horse carriage or drive to Senosa, a fantastic Fullani village of the cattle traders. Then back to Djenne to watch the sunset on the terasse of your hotel for better view, dinner and overnight.

Day 6, Feb 21, 2012: Djenne -Mopti
Departure for Mopti after breakfast, on the way visit some Fulani villages in their campment, the nomadic cattle trader of Mali, arrive to Mopti before noon, check-in at the Hotel Y'a pas de Probleme, start the visit of Mopti , the "Venice of Mali." Explore the spices market, fish market, the old town, lunch at the Bissap Café, siesta or pool, in the afternoon, a small boat tours to watch the sunset at the intersection of the 2 big African rivers, Niger and Bani, dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Day 7, Feb 22, 2012: Mopti -Niger River
Start early after breakfast, embark on the boat on the Niger River, one of the big rivers of Africa and the lifeline of Mali. A lot to see and experience in the campments of the Bozo peoples, the fishermen of Mali , and the Fulani men, the cattle traders of Mali , and some nice small villages to visit as well. Dinner around a camp fire, you won't miss the stars. Overnight under tents with mattresses and all the material for camping.

Day 8 Feb 23, 2012: River - Lac Debo - Konna-Bandiagara
Depart after breakfast and continue river tour to get to Lake Debo in the morning; visit the reserve for migrating birds and some nice hippos, and navigate to Kona for lunch, then drive to Songho a Dogon village known for its rock painting in the grotto where they hold a circumcision ceremony in every 3 years, visit and have a nice panorama view, then continue to Bandiagara for overnight at the Hotel La Falaise.

Day 9, Feb 24, 2012: Bandiagara - Dogon villages
After breakfast, drive and trek to visit southern villages of the Dogon area Djuiguibombo, Kani, Teli for lunch the most picturesque village of Dogon country, then trek or drive to Andé, the most artistic village of Dogon Country. It's all about meeting with local peoples, and learning about their culture, traditions, and a magnificent view of the escarpment, such a spectacular and unique day! Overnight at Chez Ali, a nice campment, basic but very clean, and has private bathrooms. Dinner and overnight.

Day 10,Feb 25, 2012: Dogon Country - Sévaré
Breakfast and drive to visit the non touristy Dogon villages of the plains, to have a real and authentic experience, and get to Tirely for lunch and siesta. In the afterno, drive to Amani, visit the sacred crocodile, and Irely, learn about the unique Dogon culture of animism, history, legends, myth and stories, visit mud houses in the cliffs built by Tellem people in 7th-8th cent. that reach 200-300 meters in altitude and are used today as Dogon tombs, then drive to Sangha visit, and get to Sevare for overnight at the Hotel Ambedjele or similar.

Day 11, Feb 26, 2012: Sevare- Teryabougu
Depart after breakfast, a stop to visit San, the former capital of Bobo peoples where they make shea butter, a non-touristic area, arrive in Terya Bugu for lunch and free afternoon. This place is in the middle of nowhere, heaven on the earth, just right on Bani River bank, very peaceful with a very large pool and a lot of birds and different kinds of tropical trees, overnight Hotel Terya Bugu or similar.

Day 12, Feb 27, 2012: Terya Bugu- Bamako-home
Departure towards the Malian capital, Arrival for lunch, and check-in at the Hotel Rabelais or similar. In the afternoon we will make time to visit the museum and souvenir market (optional) then back to the hotel for lazing in the pool or reading whatever you want, in the evening we will take you to the airport for farewell and wish you good trip back home.
